I am from Springhill, Nova Scotia. I first became interested in photography as a teenager when I got my first point-and-shoot camera. Wanting to experiment and become more creative with my photography, I got my first SLR camera in my early 20's. Nature photography was always my main interest, but in the early days I did not have a lens long enough to capture good images of wildlife.
I took a photography course in my early 30's and obtained a longer lens which brought me closer to wildlife. When the digital era came about, I traded in all of my 35mm gear for digital SLR gear, and purchased a Sigma 170-500mm lens. This lens was not easy to work with, was very slow at f/6.3 on the 500mm end, and getting a quality shot was not easy.
My uncle, who was an avid birder, started taking me birding and invoked a new passion in me. Now that I had the "optical reach" I had longed for, my two passions, photography and birds, had merged into one. I love photographing all aspects of nature, but wildlife photography is my true passion.
My photographs have appeared in many different publications, including The Smithsonian Field Guide to Birds, The Atlas of Breeding Birds of Alberta, Children's Guide to Gulls of North America, Manitoba Naturescape, a cover shot on Environment Canada's Atlantic Canada Shorebird Surveys Site Catalogue, a cover shot in Occasions Magazine, and various brochures, newsletters and calendars.
One of my images of an immature Harp Seal also appeared on a "Canadian Mammals" exhibition panel at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa, Ontario.
I have appeared as a featured bird photographer on Cornell Lab of Ornithology's "All About Birds" website and have authored an article on "Selecting Equipment for Bird Photography on a Budget."
My passion for nature photography has taken me as far as the edge of the Arctic Circle to photograph polar bears in the wild to backyard birds of Nova Scotia. All aspects of nature from insects and flora to the largest mammals become captivating subjects in my lens to share with the world, whether being displayed in a frame on the wall or used as an educational tool.
I do not do weddings or portrait photography. I sell my work through iStockphoto as an exclusive contributor.
