Having traveled extensively through South East Asia, and with a childhood steeped in the folktales from a different age, the world, to my eyes, is flashy new parts warring with the shadowy leftovers of another era. The ruined havelis, lost alleyways and crumbling edifice of the old ethos. And seeing this dichotomy reflected in the women.
Connected and disconnecting. Chained and tempted. Escaping and regretting. Entangled by and feeding off the roots of their past. Wood and women.
The grain of wood is the story of its growth. Fingerprinting time, it captures in its twists and flows, the evolution of consciousness and being on a deeply personal level. It's imprint carried from the seed and shaped by the world, offers a sketch of the grain of our lives. Now tortured into a knot, now bursting free into a skein of joy. Wood grows connected to the past, testament to a long line of trees.
The grain trapping, releasing, guiding and misleading female figures, both passive and active. The organic texture a microcosm of societal tensions reflected in my art.
