These are sand paintings. The textured surface of these paintings is made by combining acrylic with glue and sand on canvas, along with spray enamel and, in some cases, other materials. I have always loved texture for its metaphorical ability to replicate the shapes and forms of both natural and altered environments. Texture can also be used as a symbol for the effects of time in life, and as a means to represent growth and decay, erosion and change. In this respect, I tend to like what might be called anonymous surfaces, which often allow for a broader range of interpretations.
