Live Ice Sculpting Demonstration in front of the Van Andel Arena with Special Guest “Griff” the Grand Rapids Griffin’s Mascot.Trivia About 'Frozen in Motion':It required 3,000 pounds of ice.It contains 800 Gallons of crystalized frozen colored waterThere are a total of 420 pieces of ice that comprise the sculpture.The piece took nine months to create.To get the rich vibrant colors, the ice needs to be 'Flash Frozen': This traps the color in place (similar to how popsicles are made). Each layer takes several hours to freeze and this display has over 3,000 layers of ice.Between the color display and the two weeks of demonstrations Randy and Derek will use nearly 60,000 pounds of ice.Three components of this years sculpture were sculpted from 3 pieces of last years entry 1) this years tree fungus was last years clam shell. 2) this years snail shell was last years coral reef. 3) this years orange mushroom caps were made from last years star fish.There is at least 1 hidden emblem in the display.
