The Victorian Obesity Consortium (VOC) is a collaborative effort initiated by the major obesity research institutions across Victoria, which is working to find a solution to Australia’s obesity problem. The consortium currently consists of researchers from Monash University, University of Melbourne, Deakin University, Baker IDI Heart & Diabetes Institute, Murdoch Childrens Research Institute. A strength of the VOC is its cross institutional expertise that provides an integrated approach to supporting more effective research into the causes and prevention if obesity as well as the care and treatment of obese individuals. The causes of obesity is one with enormous breadth and complexity; likewise VOC proposes to utilize its broad expertise derived from the various research groups across the institutions to come up with a solution to match this breadth and complexity. VOC consists of expert researchers in the areas public health, clinical research, and basic science. This encompasses all aspects of obesity from the identification of causes and mechanisms of development, to treatment and prevention. VOC has the ability to share platforms, ideas, equipment and animal models in order to determine the most effective way to combat the obesity epidemic in Australia.
