Perhaps the most interesting area in this world is the ocean floors. Even, according to some people it is even interesting than infinite space. When you go under the water level, a separate world resides there. A separate ecosystem, separate floral and faunal diversity.Every ecosystem has the producers as the base ground. So in the oceans plants are available only to that zone where the sunbeams can penetrate. This is because these plants are getting their energy by photosynthesis. And the photosynthesis cannot take place without sunbeam penetration. A huge floral diversity is seen under the water level. This means there are so many varieties of ocean plants available. These plants are a very good source of iodine. It is hypothesized that the plant species first took their birth in the ocean floor. There are so many coloured plant species are there in the ocean floor. Several thousand species have been discovered till in the littoral zone and the in the continental shelves.Planktons are possibly the lion's share of the plants that are found in the ocean floors. These marine plants do not possess broad leaves as their neighbours in dry land. Colourful and bright they are. Some plant species have even been reported which feed on the marine insects and small animals in the ocean.Phytoplanktons are basically the majority of the plants. Animals residing in the sea floor actually feed on these plants. As these plants reside in the iodine halide mixed sea water, these plants are very good source of iodine. Even some plants are used as drugs in iodine-deficiency disorders. In commercial extraction of iodine, ashes of these plants called Kelp are used.The plant diversity is extremely huge. Several types of ocean plants are seen in Indian Shelf, European Shelf and American Shelf. Actually the water type and the temperature of the sea water is the main cause of this diversity. But it is postulated that the shelf soil type is another main factor behind this.Ocean plants need a very good research. Commercial researches are welcome in this field. This area can be a very good area for economy. If any country can utilise its ocean floral diversity, an alternative source of food can be found and the economy will get its stability. Some plants are used by astronauts in space-ships as good source for oxygen. Some plants are used as fish-foods. An alternative source of protein can be found from these sea plants.
