The construction of the OSU football stadium was finished in 1922 by H.E. Latham Company of Columbus, OH. The entire project cost $1.49 million and was the largest poured concrete structure in the world. Architect Howard Dwight Smith used a number of building techniques unusual to football stadiums during construction, including a slurry wall to prevent flooding from the rising river and auditorium style balcony decks for seating instead of the common stadium seating. Before a series of renovations that began in the 1970s, Ohio Stadium held a mere 66,212 people.
