Bruce Padgett
Bruce Padgett was born in Laurel, Mississippi in 1957. From the very beginning, his love of art, music, and dance was apparent, and at the age of 14, he was awarded a scholarship to study ballet at North Carolina School of the Arts. At the end of his third year, he was invited to continue his studies at the prestigious School of American Ballet in New York City where he was awarded the Ford Foundation Scholarship. In 1976, he was invited to become a member of the New York City Ballet and danced numerous roles in ballets such as George Balanchines A Midsummer Nights Dream, Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, The Nutcracker, La Sonnambula, Symphony in C, Union Jack, La Valse, Square Dance, Donizetti Variations, Prodigal Son, Vienna Waltzes, Bugaku, Chaconne, Stars and Stripes, Don Quixote, Noahs Ark, Ivesiana, and Jewels. He also performed works by Jerome Robbins and Peter Martins such as Goldberg Variations, The Four Seasons, Ma Mere LOye and Cappricio Italien. In the summer of 1992 and 1993, he toured throughout Italy, England, and Switzerland with Stars of American Ballet.
After his retirement from dance in 1995, he immersed himself in the art of painting. The line, beauty, sense of grace and expression achieved in the physical world of ballet is a constant theme throughout his work. What has emerged from these images can best be described as Austere Solitude, compositions of solitary figures in stark surroundings, embraced by light stemming from a natural or artificial source. The beauty of light being absorbed into the skin gives the paintings and drawings their rich color and depth as well as their mood and intensity. Not only are these images mere figures in light, they also reflect the human condition. Bruce Padgett has worked on several commissions and has sold many of his most personal work . His paintings now hang in homes located in New York City, Texas, Massachusetts, and Tennessee.
