A little about myself…
I was fifteen years old when a friend introduced me to the “magic” that occurs in a darkroom. I have had a camera in my hand for the forty years since that time. My early training was working mostly with black and white film with medium format cameras. I also worked with other art mediums and especially enjoyed working with charcoal and oil pastels. To this day I still try to incorporate their unique characteristics in my photographic images.
I photographed with film until seven years ago therefore I am of the school of thought that you get the picture as perfect as you can when it is taken. Digital imaging allows for so much manipulation of an image after the exposure but I still believe in getting it as perfect as possible when it is captured. I truly enjoy working in the digital medium and experimenting with what can be done just like the days when I experimented with what could be done with different films combined with developing and printing techniques. I find it interesting that the newest “developing software” is trying to mimic some of the unique characteristics of film. I still have my film cameras and darkroom equipment and maybe I will go back to experimenting with them one day
I prefer working with natural light but am entirely comfortable working with studio lighting when the situation is best suited for it. I especially like doing portrait work. The portrait of a person should be a true image of them with very little manipulation other than minor cosmetic re-touching. The best portraits can only be achieved by having an understanding of that person. I believe that up-front interviews are an important facet of this understanding. I have also spent thirty years of my professional life in sales and know all too well the importance of listening and asking the right questions.
My other passion is photographing nature. Words cannot define its beauty or the immense pleasure it brings when you can capture it in an image and the following quotation could not sum it up better.
“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.”
Henry David Thoreau, Walden (1854)
Photographs are our memories. They are one of the few tangible ways for us to see a glimpse of our past. The images I have made are in many cases frozen moments in time, the people and the landscapes have all changed since they were captured. Digital photography has made people move away from the traditional photo albums of the past but I think they still have a purpose for bringing back those memories. My children still enjoy picking up the many photo albums in our house from time to time. As I age I wonder what I can leave as a legacy. Hopefully the thousands of images I have captured will spark fond memories to those I have been fortunate enough to have met and “captured” in time.
