Poetry 247 is a “one-stop shop” for anyone looking for a quality spoken word poetry experience. Visitors of the website have the option to follow some of the best spoken word poets in the country. Visitors also have the option to find information on the best spoken word events in Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. Poetry247 gives fans easy access to the updated performance schedule of their favorite poets. Visitors of the website are be able to find updated information concerning a specific poet or a specific poetry event within three clicks or less. The Poetry247 website consists of an Artists Section and Open Mic Section. In addition to that we have a Twitter (@Poetry247) page and facebook page set up so that information can be released instantly. Since most audience members have a facebook or twitter account, having a page on those social media services will allow for constant feedback on the events and performances. Both social media sites will also allow information to reach spoken word fans instantly, especially Twitter. What Makes Us Different? There are currently several open mic calendars online for people who support poetry. Poetry247 will be different for two reasons. We screen our poets and venues. We will also update our information on a regular basis. We will update each poet’s profile page at least once a month. We will update the venue pages at least every three months. As previously stated, we also screen our poets and venues. For poets we took into consideration: online presence, whether the poet is traveling consistently (performing outside of their local area), how long the poet has been writing/performing, how many times the poet has featured at the venues we promote, and how much the audience enjoys the feature performance of each poet. For venues we take into consideration: how long has the open mic lasted (consistency), the size of the audience, its online presence, the quality of its feature performances, and how well it treats both its open mic poets and feature poets. Two Years We’ve chosen to follow each poet and open mic for two years. We want to follow the poets long enough for people across the country (and globe) to experience one of their shows. We want to increase each poet’s fanbase and album/book sells. We also want to be sure we’re spotlighting some of the fresh faces in spoken word as well as some of the more experienced poets. Therefore, each year we will feature five new poets on the website. We will never follow more than ten poets at a time. We will add five poets each year and discontinue following each poet after their respective two year period. For example, our first set of poets will be featured January 2011 until January 2013. Our second set will be featured January 2012 until January 2014. We will also try our best to highlight any special spoken word event that may occur once a year or an event that occurs in response to recent activity in our society. For instance, had there been a poetry event dedicated to the disaster in Haiti we would have featured that event on our website.
