Lawrence J. (Larry) Bilansky
Larry’s interest in photography goes back to the fifth grade when he got his first camera. He became serious about photography in college where he helped work his way through school as a newspaper photographer for the UWM Post, his college newspaper, and as a freelance stringer for several local weekly papers. His interest in photography has never waned.
Prior to coming to Hartford in 1981, Larry worked as a wedding photographer for one of Milwaukee’s more prestigious studios and developed his skills as a fine art photographer. His works have been exhibited in a number of juried art shows as well as several galleries in and around Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Reading, Pennsylvania. Recently, his works have been shown at the West Hartford, Cheshire and Newington CT public libraries as well as at a small commercial gallery.
Larry currently does fine art photography under the name of LJB Special Photography (ljbfoto@aol.com). One of his specialties is Nontraditional Portraiture, which he defines as anything you want it to be other than the standard studio portraits. Included, along with studio work such as intimate portraits (often referred to as “boudoir” photography) and figure studies, is live action photography – performance photographs of theatre, sports, dance, musicians etc.
“I particularly enjoy the challenge of live action portraiture,” says Larry. “Although still photographs freeze a moment in time, the spontaneity of expression – the reality – of action photos gives them a feeling of dynamics that is usually missing in studio portraits. An additional unique challenge, especially in live performances, is the photographer’s inability to control either the lighting or the action.”
Larry can be seen talking pictures for the Park Road Playhouse, the Podunk Bluegrass Festival, WWUH-FM (University of Hartford alternative public radio) and other community based organizations in the Hartford area.
Most photographs in Larry’s portfolio can also be custom printed and framed in other sizes. All portraiture on exhibit has been released by the subject or taken with knowledge that they might be exhibited. Larry also does private, totally confidential, sittings and commissions.
