Kelly Powers - Pianist
Throughout her performance career, she has had the opportunity to play and study with jazz legends Jackie McLean, Jimmy Heath and Slide Hampton. A graduate of the Hartt School of Music, Kelly studied and performed extensively with great jazz trombonist Steve Davis (of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, as well as Chick Coreas Grammy-Nominated Band, Origin). She also worked with accomplished bassist Nat Reeves (of the Kenny Garrett Quartet and Jackie McLeans MacBand)
During her four years at Hartt, she had much exposure to jazz pianists Cedar Walton, Harold Mabern and Larry Willis although her primary teacher was Andy LaVerne. Andy states, Thanks to her keen ear, talent and ability to quickly assimilate musical concepts, her playing is always steadily and rapidly progressing. Most importantly, her playing swings!
In 2002, Kelly earned the opportunity to perform and study in London, England at Middlesex University. During her time abroad, she traveled and performed with various bands throughout Germany, Spain, Italy and Holland. In addition, Kelly has performed at the Regattabar in Boston, Smoke Jazz Club in New York City and jazz clubs in Japan, among others. Kelly recently finished her masters degree at the Manhattan School of Music.
