The African American Jazz Preservation Society of Pittsburgh | Welcome
Jazz in Pittsburgh, Black Jazz in Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Jazz, Black Jazz Pittsburgh, The African American Jazz Preservation Society of Pittsburgh (AAJPSP) is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. AAJPSP is an outgrowth of the realization that a great deal of the rich cultural contributions made in the field of jazz originated from musicians who were born, raised, are living or have lived in Pittsburgh. It has long been the position of those who represent AAJPSP that there are many gaps in the gathering and dissemination of information relative to the history of jazz in Pittsburgh. More specifically, its founders, contributors and their subsequent social and artistic influence to the world have significant ties to the Pittsburgh area. The African American Jazz Preservation Society of Pittsburgh began operations with the support of the National Conference on Christians and Jews (NCCJ) and the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work and in was incorporated in September1996. From 1996 - 1998, AAJPSP prioritized recapturing the lost legacy of the African American Musicians Union Local 471 (1908-1966) through conducting oral history interviews; and by obtaining historical documentation, photographs and artifacts. More than 94 musicians have been interviewed including Stanley Turrentine, Art Blakely, Alyce Brooks, Ahmad Jamal and Joe Westray. Artifacts dating back to the early 1900s such as union membership cards and records, photographs and club bills have also been collected. With the exception of some photographs used for public programming, the materials are being housed at the University of Pittsburgh-University Library System Archives Service Center. The interviews, photographs and other artifacts will be used in a publication detailing the musical history of African Americans in Pittsburgh.
