Andrew Yeaman. Artist's Statement. My paintings explore the patterns of nature. They express many of the concepts I have met when studying science; symmetry, harmony, order, complexity, scale, self-similarity.
Self-similarity is of particular interest to me. A pattern is said to be self-similar when it is exactly or approximately similar to a part of itself. Such a pattern is composed of sub-patterns that occur repeatedly at different scales. A typical example of this is the branching pattern of a tree.
The patterns of nature have a high degree of self-similarity. It is possible to find the same or similar patterns in different places and on different scales in nature. I look for patterns of this kind and create abstract, generic versions of them. Through painting I develop a greater appreciation of these patterns and, as I am myself a pattern of nature, a deeper understanding of my own nature.
Painting is a source of great happiness and pleasure; it helps me to find great beauty in my everyday world. I hope the paintings will bring some of this pleasure to the viewer.
