At the time of the organic origin of our planet, ozone played an important role in nature's life cycle. In his remarkable experiments in 1953, Standley L. Miller demonstrated how amino acids are formed from methane and ammonia when subjected to an electrical discharge. Amino acids are the building blocks of all living cells and tissues. Simultaneously, during this process, electrical discharges also produce ozone. Ozone is highly reactive and is extensively used for research in the field of organic and inorganic chemistry as well as for purification of water. BARC has developed an ozone generator for producing high concentrations of ozone. Ozone (O3) is a gas composed of 3 oxygen atoms combined in a ring. Ozone itself is a toxic, blue colored gas, which has a distinct odor, and is about one and a half times heavier than air. When it is under pressure, it is an
unstable gas that decomposes readily into molecular oxygen. Ozone is a pungent gas naturally produced in the Earth's upper atmosphere by the action of UV sunlight on oxygen molecules. Ozone can be created for water treatment purposes by sending air through a special chamber containing a high-voltage which creates a blue plasma corona; it is also produced by sending air through a chamber of ultraviolet light.
