YULIANA CANDRA
Artist Statement
Throughout my travel to over 40 countries in the last decade, I was often moved by what passing in front of my eyes. In the early years I was quite inconsistent in capturing the moments. I was still trying to figure out how I want to remember these dust of memory foam in a way that makes sense to me in the future. Eventually I identified what the most precious elements that I want to remember from all those trips: the people and anything in their surroundings expressing their stories just by looking at them through my lens. The rusts and the ruggedness speak to me loud and clear. There is so much history buried under each peel of the old paints, or in between the wrinkle lines on those wise faces, and I can hear them whispered to me as I press my shutter.
I capture my photographs with the sole purpose of retelling the story, to remind myself many years later and to retell the story to others without any need for verbal and written words that distract the illusive visuals. Sometimes circumstance abolished the privilege to tell the story in the conventional ways, and you were reduced to only your interpretation from what you see. I want my audience to hear the voices of the storytellers as they look at my photographs. My intention is for my art to speak for itself more than any poet can recite.
I use Nikon SLR D40X and D300 with Nikkor Zoom Lens 18-200 mm to shoot my photographs. I never use a tripod since I mostly capture candid moments in motion that barely give me an opportunity to stage anything up. Nothing is more captivating than the look of instant gratification or the sudden awe. I shoot both indoors and outdoors, depending on what interests and intrigues me.
I print my photographs on museum-quality canvas material with Giclée printing method, which is made with high-quality archival inks using a high-resolution large format inkjet printer. I presented my work either as Canvas Gallery Wraps or as Framed Giclée Canvas Boards. Protective coating is sprayed over to preserve the images and to help prevent scratches and other damage.
These images keep my grounded and remind me of the humanity in me. They remind me that I am part of the world’s ecosystem and my action will have an impact to the equilibrium of it, and vice versa. My images motivate me to get involved and to keep telling the stories to others in the hope that when more people relate to them, fewer bad decisions will be made. The world is obviously getting more intertwined with the flow of globalization... and this is the true representation of me.
