The new BCA Gallery was opened June 8th 2009 by the Hon. Wilkie Rasmussen, Minister of Tourism with a keynote speech by Ron Brownson, Senior Curator, New Zealand & Pacific Art, Auckland City Art Gallery, Toi O Tamaki.
Taking inspiration from the galleries of New York's Chelsea Art District, the new BCA art space stands as one of the most advanced in the pacific region.
BCA is dedicated to the exhibition of challenging contemporary art including paintings, sculpture, photography, video and new media installation.
BCA represents Cook Islands artists Mike Tavioni, Jerome Sheddon, Kay George, Tim Buchanan, Rick Welland & Loretta Reynolds as well as New Zealand/Pacific artists Mark Cross, Andy Leleisi’uao and Michel Tuffery. NYC Artist Yazmany Arboleda joins BCA in April 2010.
BCA offers an ‘artist in residence’opportunity which enables professional artists to create a body of work within a six week timeframe.
In addition, BCA presents non-commercial historical and international exhibitions that serve the public interest.
Since its inception in 2001, BCA with sponsors Air New Zealand, Pacific Resort Hotels, CITC Liquor & Montana Wines and CooK Islands Printing Services (CIPS) have pursued a dynamic pacific contemporary art exhibition schedule, supporting shows in Rarotonga, Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin and New York.
