Stephan Schafer
Stephan Schafer started playing the clarinet at the age of 9, saxophone at the age of 14, flute a few years later. Born and raised in Nuremburg, Germany, he studied classical saxophone with Gnther Priesner at the Meistersinger - Konservatorium in Nuremburg from 1988 to 1994. 1989 Stephan came third in the prestigious national competition Jugend musiziert. During the time in Germany he already worked as a freelancing musician with various jazz, latin, funk and rock bands, Chamber Music Ensembles, the opera, Theatre Shows and Big Bands. In 1994 he migrated to Sydney, Australia. He has been teaching saxophone at Shore Grammar School since February 1995. Further studies include lessons with Dale Barlow, Walt Weiskopf and Grant Stewart. Stephan has recorded and played with James & John Morrison (Swing City) Emma Pask, Mark Rivett, Emile Nelson, Vermillion Girl, Mucho Mambo. Also performed with Don Burrows, George Golla, Monica Trapagas, Barbara Morrison (US), Neilson Gough, Ian Cooper, Frank Bennet, Rhonda Burchmore, The Sunday Night Orchestra (Germany), Ralph Pyl Big Band, Glen Shorrock, Grace Knight, Jeff Duff, Renee Geye, Kate Ceberano, Doug Parkinson, Galapagos Duck and many others.,Stephan Schafer, saxophonist and composer, New CD Time Travel (Newmarket) out now Stephan Schafer Quartet, Sydney, David Longo, Mark Harris, Nic Cecire
