Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan
Founded in 1840, the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan (SHHK) provided critical assistance in securing accommodations, jobs and burial services for the early settlers. It started its operation in Thian Hock Keng Temple, also known as Ma Cho Keng, which was visited by Hokkien immigrants paying homage and giving thanks to Ma Cho for their safe passage down south. As the Hokkiens took root in Singapore, SHHK expanded its welfare and social services support for the Hokkien community. These included the promotion of education and the preservation of Chinese language and culture.
