ARTIST'S STATEMENT
I create images to express my reverence for the natural world, through visions of nature beyond ordinary experience. Tiny natural artifacts reveal a world of textures, or abstractions open symbolic doors, or infra-red vision yields new insight.
I am drawn to innovate and challenge photography’s boundaries. I prefer to spend weeks or months on each production, using digital tools for the creative freedom and precise control of oil painting.
My images, like nature, invite creative exploration.
BIO
I learned about the structure of the natural world through a Masters in Ecosystems Ecology in the early ‘80s. The creative pull was strong, and I opened a studio for product and concept photography in San Francisco in 1983.
In the studio I learned to express with light and color, while explorations with Ansel Adams’ zone system in the Sierra Nevada develped my taste for full tone, detailed prints.
In 1990 I began my TROPICA portfolio, shooting black & white infra-red film in Hawaii and Fiji, and tinting them with photorealistic detail through months of digital work. This tropica portfolio was featured in a juried show at Denison University in 2004, and at a solo show at Framing Dragon Picture Co. in Mill Valley in 2010.
Health problems led to closing my commercial operations in 1999, and as I regained strength I returned exclusively to artistic expression. In 2006 I began my current series: studio and location images of small, unnoticed, and symbolic natural objects. The results to date are in my IN SITU and IN STUDIO portfolios.
