I've had a passion for photography since I was a child. I bought my first camera after I graduated from college and was earning a steady income. My first camera was a Konica SLR which I later replaced with a Nikon F4. My first digital camera was the Nikon Coolpix 995. Over the years, I have photographed weddings, portraits, pets, ATV (All Terrain Vehicle ) races, landscapes, flowers and other things. I have served as editor/photographer for newsletters, worked on multimedia projects and headed the multimedia ministry in my church. Photography has always an intimate part of my life.
I worked as a research biologist for a pharmaceutical company for thirty years. At work I was able to carve out a niche for myself handling the photographic needs of my research group. Scientific photography cultivated my eye for close-up and macro photography.
Since leaving research, I've focused on photography as an art form. To me there is a magical element to photography. Weeds transform into beautiful art. Barren trees reveal a hidden beauty. Ordinary people become extraordinary. This is all possible via the eye of the photographer and a machine called a camera.
My main aim is to create art that is beautful, serene, awe inspiring, meditative and soul uplifting. I take photos that make me feel good. I'm a hedonist in the pursuit of my art. I hope others feel what I feel but I'm sustained by my own euphoria. I create art that I can live with, art that I can simply gaze upon and feel comfortable doing nothing. People comment that my flower photos remind them of Georgia O'Keeffe's paintings. Some have even asked if my photos are paintings. O'Keeffe is one of my favorite artists so apparently she has influenced my art. I didn't set out to imitate her. I just seem to be pulled closer and closer to the subject. Unlike artists who specialize in glorious landscapes, I seek the beauty in the details.
