Dark Familiar: Poems by ALEDA SHIRLEY....
...a site to pay tribute to the brilliantly written poetry by Aleda Shirley. Aleda Shirley is the author of three collections of poetry, Dark Familiar (Sarabande Books, 2006), Long Distance (Miami University Press, 1996), and Chinese Architecture (University of Georgia Press, 1986), which won the Poetry Society of America's Norma Farber First Book Prize, as well as two chapbooks, Silver Ending, which was the Stanley Hanks Chapbook Contest winner in 1992, and Rilke's Children (Larkspur Press, 1987).She was the editor of The Beach Book: A Literary Companion (Sarabande Books, 1999) and cooeditor of the Mississippi Writers Directory and Literary Guide (Center for the Study of Southern Culture, 1995). She has published poems in many magazines, including Poetry, American Poetry Review, Georgia Review, Kenyon Review, Virginia Quarterly Review, Crazyhorse, Prairie Schooner, Antioch Review, Poetry Northwest, and Antioch Review.She has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Mississippi Arts Commission, the Kentucky Arts Council, and the Kentucky Foundation for Women.Aleda Shirley helped create and directs All Write!, a program with the Mississippi Arts Commission, which places writers in community literacy programs and correctional facilities to teach creative writing to students working toward their GED.
