Stephen Houseknecht
is an exciting, imaginative and exacting photographic artist who has worked in the medium for over thirty years. He and his work have been an influence on other photographic artists and an inspiration to his photography students. He has also been working a long-term photographical-historical research project involving the photographic output of his great-grandparents, P. Beecher and Ada L. Houseknecht and their photography studio of Batavia, New York and their fifteen thousand surviving glass plate negatives dating from the late 1870s through the 1940s.
A New York State Legislative Initiative Grant (Natural Heritage Trust) has supported the research and printing of selected glass plate negatives at the New York State Museum in Albany, in addition to three New York State Council of the Arts Decentralization funding grants, which were administered by the Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council.
