EtsyThe Red Tape JewelryFacebookJenny Sammons has been designing and making jewelry in Washington, DC, since 2003 while also working full-time jobs to support herself as she grew as an artist. In 2008, she took a job at the National Archives and was inspired by all of the historical artifacts lying around collecting dust. The first thing to catch her eye was authentic Red Tape, which was used prior to the Civil War to seal government documents and where the phrase “cutting through the red tape” originated. She uses the actual tape to create cufflinks, pins, earrings and necklaces. The Red Tape Jewelry was a huge hit, and the Archives encouraged her to make items featuring other historical artifacts. Since then, she’s designed cufflinks and pendants featuring the Bill of Rights, the Constitution and the museum’s extensive collection of WWII propaganda posters.In the future she plans to expand her line of jewelry to include more historical and vintage images that appeal to policy geeks, history buffs, and everyone else who enjoys a fascinating story behind their accessories. She’s always on the hunt for new ideas, and also plans on using her own abstract artwork in some upcoming designs. Part of her mission as a designer is to give back to communities in need, so $2.00 from each item sold on her Etsy store is donated to Partners in Health, an organization that is working to fight poverty and disease in Haiti and around the world. As she expands her jewelry collection, she’d like to create a line to specifically benefit the people of Haiti, perhaps using slogans or images from the country.
