This article is about torn rotator cuff symptoms. The symptoms will appear in the shoulder area. The shoulder is stabilized and protected by a muscle group called rotator cuff tendons. Pain in the shoulder can be caused by these becoming inflamed or torn.The symptoms of a torn rotator cuff are typically, pain felt at the top and side of the shoulder. This area is known as the deltoid region because it is associated with the deltoid muscles. The pain increases when the arm is raised up or extended outwards from the body. For example the pain is often noticed first thing in the morning whilst getting dressed.The symptoms help a doctor with the diagnosis of the shoulder problem. A patient presenting with weakness or pain when the arm is rotated in an inward or outward movement, can be, an indication that the rotator cuff tendon is torn. The doctor may ask the patient to move the shoulder backwards and lower the arm from the horizontal to the side. Pain noticed when this is done, points towards a tearing of the rotator cuff.Often symptoms will vary and if the doctor is to be certain an examination will not be enough. Even X-rays appear normal as the injury is to the soft tissue and not related to the bones of the shoulder. The answer is an MRI scan which will show a full tear of the tendon. Unfortunately, even this type of scanning can miss minor tears. Again, another form of scan called an Arthrogram can be used. It is specially calibrated to examine joints, most commonly wrist, hip and shoulder.Torn rotator cuff symptoms can be alleviated if anesthetic is injected into the area in a very low dosage. To treat the symptoms of the rotator cuff injury, the patient is told not to work the shoulder. Test whether heat or the opposite cold applied to the area will alleviate the symptoms is often tried. Pain killers may be prescribed and anti-inflammatory drugs. Sometimes cortisone in the form of an injection is used close to the rotator cuff itself. Other types of treatment could include ultrasound or small electric shocks. Normally the patient needs to use a sling when resting especially at the beginning of treatment.
