Taos Painters: Lloyd J. Mitchell (1909 - 1978)
Lloyd Mitchell was known for his paintings of horses, riders, and western landscapes.
Mitchell was born in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas, the son of a horse trainer. At age sixteen he left home to work as a cowboy on ranches around the western plains. In the early 1930s he went to California and found work in movie westerns. After serving in the Navy during World War II, Mitchell settled in Temple City, California where he became a successful businessman.
Mitchell enjoyed sketching and painting from a young age, and in the late 1940s he enrolled at the Chouinard Institute studying under Henry Good and Will Foster. He later studied with Sam Hyde Harris and painted with his friend George Ford Morris. He was a member of the American Institute of Fine Arts and several western art societies.
Mitchell primarily painted Old West scenes, most of which included horses. He is probably best known for his

Taos Painters: Fremont F. Ellis (1897-1985)
Fremont Ellis was a multi-talented and anachronistic member of the New Mexico arts community for over sixty years. The son of nomadic dentist, carnival performer and theater operator, Ellis received very little formal education of any kind as he bounced around Montana from one mining town to another. During a brief trip to New York City as a child, Ellis went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, whose collection mesmerized him. He started painting copies of the pieces while still in New York, and continued to paint regularly upon returning to Montana.

Taos Painters: Ila Mae McAfee (1897-1995)
Ila McAfee was born in a Colorado ranching community, ten miles from the nearest schoolhouse. Her artistic interest began early and centered upon horses, which she would draw as a child. She received her B.A. from Western State College. Her formal art education was at the Haz Studio School in Los Angeles and the Art Institute of Chicago. Displeased with the quality of instruction, she decided to study under one particular painter she had taken courses with in Chicago, James E. McBurney. McBurney was a muralist, and took McAfee on as his assistant for several years, after which she traveled to New York to study at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League.
