Tattooing has been practiced in the Middle East for thousands and thousands of years. In fact tattooing in the Middle East predates the Arabic language and the Arab people by many thousands of years. One example of this is in the Jewish Torah which explicitly forbids tattooing in the book of Leviticus 19:28, or YaYikra in Hebrew. The Torah was given to the holy Jewish people sometime around 1300 B.C.E., at Mount Sinai, which is located in the Sinai Peninsula and currently under the sovereignty of Egypt. What this example shows is that tattooing existed back then or else how could and would tattoos be mentioned in the Jewish holy book? Mummies that have been unearthed in Egypt have tattoos as a matter of fact. Many tribal Arabs across the Middle East use tattoos to mark tribal affiliation as do Berbers in North Africa.
