What Is Thyroid
What is thyroid? Thyroid came into human knowledge in 19th century. It is a butterfly shaped small gland present in the front of the neck. This gland produces mainly two types of hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine. These thyroid hormones help in functioning of many systems of body specially metabolism. This gland also controls the rate of protein formation, energy consumption, and effects of other hormones in the body. Thyroid is divided into two parts connected by isthmus which acts as a bridge between the two halves. Thyroid present in women's body is larger than those in men's body. Thyroid functioning is controlled by pituitary gland that secretes thyroid stimulating hormone. Diseases related to thyroid gland are common in all around the world which are caused due to production of less hormone or more hormones.
