Finding and Using America's Most Disablity-Friendly Colleges: A Guide for Students with Physical Disabilities
Did you know that of some 2,500 four-year colleges in the US today, only four provide academic and personal services comprehensive enough for a student with serious physical disabilities to live on campus?
So what? Here’s what.
The average high school senior with serious physical disabilities has spent 13 years learning and studying with personal assistance in eating, toileting, transportation, perhaps typing papers and more, provided for her by law. When she graduates and moves on to post secondary education, she may be surprised to find that colleges do not have to provide any of these things.
Students with physical disabilities have to work out practical, personal details that other students do not, even if their top criteria in choosing a college are ordinary things like course offerings, college rank and geographic location. So whether you need a lot of help or just a little, it is a great thing when you find a college that will work with you.
Not one college guidebook specifically addresses these needs of students with physical disabilities however, so we created this website as one place where all types of useful links and college information are gathered and kept current.
We hope you’ll read our blog, tell us about your college experience and help us build the first interactive “college guide” for students with physical disabilities!
