I've been a photographer since the late 1960s, but mostly as a hobby, although I did run a small commercial photography business for a while, during and after college, and did some photojournalism in the first few years of my newspaper career.
But my professional work has mostly been as a newspaper editor. I spent 27 years at the Cape Cod Times, the daily newspaper on Cape Cod. I was managing editor there for 15 years, which left little time for photography.
Since 1999, I've been editorial page editor of The Fayetteville Observer, the North Carolina daily paper covering the state's Cape Fear region, as well as Fort Bragg, which is becoming the biggest (in number of soldiers) Army post in the country -- home of the 82nd Airborne Division and the Army Special Operations Command, both of which are in the news quite a bit these days.
Digital photography has made it easy for me to get back into photography on a more serious level, and nature photography is my special joy. The outdoors is my retreat, the place I find sanity. I spend as much time as I can hiking, kayaking and birding. Bird photography is my greatest photo passion.
I use Canon equipment -- currently, an Eos 7D, with an older 40D as backup. I use Canon and Sigma lenses, and am especially partial to birding with my 500mm f4 monster Canon, sometimes with a 1.4x teleconverter behind it.
The photos on this site have been edited on an iMac and Aperture photo-editing software.
Come back and visit often. I'm working to post new work often.
The photos in the galleries are all copyrighted and can't be reproduced without my written permission (and it may well involve payment, too).
