Jewish Wedding Photographer Los Angeles - Monika Lightsone
I attended the Montreal based sister college of the Parisian Ecole des Beaux Arts while earning Double Major with Distinction in Film and Communications from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. My focus was studying art as a visual means of communication.
In 1984 I moved to Los Angeles to work in film as a film editor. In this process I became attuned to understanding how the nuances of performance, in a simple moment of "stillness" communicated on its own, imagery. The editing process sensitized me to subtleties of expression of a performance as it brought a story to life on screen. This was my precursor to still photography. I have been told that there is a screen like intimacy to my photos. I look at life as drama on a screen.
Thirteen years ago, I had just Produced/Edited a film which won the special Jurors award at The Sundance Film Festival. At that same time I was in the hurdles of a divorce with two children. It was then, that I discovered a community radically different from any I have ever known. Nestled in between the Internationally acclaimed Fred Segal Store, trendy restaurants and Necromancer Saloons on Melrose Blvd were Jewish men in black hats of 18th Century Europe. These Chassidic families didn't own a television, watch feature films or permit internet in the homes for their children to use. No one heard of Brad Pitt, Marilyn Monroe or who the Beatles were. I'll never forget that first Friday night sabbath meal I was invited to. Looking at the black coats and hats and beards the feeling I had was being in a scene of Saturday Night Live. It was surreal and yet I was captivated by the simplicity and wholesome charm of their lives - and the purity of the children's faces. It was a leap from Hollywood that I found mesmerizing. Soon I became known by my Jewish name, Mushka and found myself "returning" to the laws of Torah and I began studying the inner secrets of Torah, popularly known as kaballah. It was during this transformation that I picked up my camera, and with the eye of an editor, began a new career as a professional photographer. Little did I realize that 10 years would pass without me walking into a movie theatre."
