I live and work split between Kazakhstan and Russia. Most of the time I spend in Almaty Kazakhstan where I live in the foothills of the Tien Shan Mountains. When I have free time I spend it in the mountains hiking, ski touring, mountain biking and some paragliding. I try to take pictures that reflect what it's like around here. Sometimes there are such long breaks between photo sessions that I find I have forgotten how my camera works and I end up frantically fumbling around with the dials and menu before the light changes. I keep telling myself that I'll try harder to get good at photography but there just isn't time. I don’t have epiphanies when I take pictures (or make what some people like to call “images”) nor am I inclined to drone on about the transcendental connection between pictures, nature, God, aliens or whatever. I cannot bear the "artist statements" of real photographers because they all sound numbingly corny in the same way. I think these people should simply let their pictures do the talking and spare us the stories on how manifest destiny caused them to pick up their first camera at age 3 and how it's all been uphill from there. I just like being outdoors and the physical challenge of hiking up some mountain and maybe getting a good shot or two before the light fades.
