Taxpayers deserve to know how their money is being spent. By opening the books to the public, government transparency gives them the ability to do just that. Across the nation, there have been numerous efforts for greater transparency. Most revolve around government spending. In 2005, Senator Barack Obama and Senator Tom Coburn joined together in a bipartisan effort for greater transparency–and now, federal government spending is posted online in a searchable, open database. Many states, counties, and local governments across the country are currently working to be more open and transparent as well. This website is a project of the Illinois Policy Institute, a non-profit, non-governmental organization based in Chicago and Springfield, IL. You can learn more about the Institute here. You can also learn more about transparency projects around the country at the State Policy Network.
