JoyfulReflection
Reflection is defined as a contemplation of the contents or qualities of one’s own thoughts or remembered experiences. What better way to reflect on one’s life than through photographs - memories glaring back at us that put us back in that single moment; like grinding on an America's Cup sailing boat, a once in a lifetime experience brought back to life through a photograph.
I always liked taking pictures but never studied the art. I got serious about photography just before a diving trip to Raja Ampat, Indonesia. I was sick of the poor quality pictures and delayed shutters of those point-and-shoot cameras so I decided to purchase a "real" underwater camera rig. Sea & Sea had a good deal on one of their demo set ups so I ordered it online. It came on Wednesday and I left for the trip on Sunday hoping that all the pieces were there and that someone on the liveaboard could help me put it together and show me how to use it! Well, I got lucky. It just so happened that my now good friend Karin Brussaard (http://www.karinbrussaard.nl/) was on board. A Dutch undewater photogragher, she did not quite understand how this woman from American could come all that way with a fairly complex and expensive camera rig and not have a clue how to use it. But she took me under her wing and we got some great shots from that trip (to her amazement!)
I've expanded my portfolio from underwater photography to nature, travel and wedding photography. I have not found my "niche" yet but, as I explore the possibilities, I look forward to reflecting on the experience photography has brought me. I look forward to sharing that with you.
