Art and Photography of Janet Brenan Sherry - The Artographer
My artistic education evolved from a childhood creative energy reveling in color and abstract expression, to an assimilation of the cultivated norm of linear thinking and cohesive logic refined under the critical eye of my high school art teacher and more recent studies with one of Oklahoma’s 100 Centennial Artists, Gaylon Thompson.
During college, the written and spoken word became my major vehicle of expression; an ability that served me well as both a Registered Nurse and as a trial lawyer, while providing personal pleasure through the challenge of composing traditional Japanese Haiku poetry.
As I have continued life’s journey, where once I might have spent hours searching for the perfect single word to express my thoughts, I found myself discovering personal satisfaction and self-identity through visual artistic endeavors. As the world in general, and my chosen professions in particular acquired new methods and means of communication, I incorporated instructive drawings, graphic and photographic images, and finally computer-aided visual arts in my communication repertoire.
Artistically, photographic snapshots capturing a moment in time soon became a mere technical exercise that lacked an underlying subjective satisfaction. Eventually, film yielded to digital imaging and the discovery of computerized manipulation as creative self-expression. Finally, crossing the photographic portal, I chose to apply oil paint to canvas in an exploration of the fluidity and movement of an eclectic range of subjects, through which depiction I hope to transport those viewing my art into the shared experience of expanded emotion and narrative that I call: “eMotion”
My photographic prints and oil paintings have won awards and been exhibited in Ft. Smith Art Center Annual Photography and Art Competitions. Participation in the annual Norman Park Foundation Tree Photo Contests, have garnered awards and publication of my photographs in the Norman Transcript and the Norman Transcript Online. My photography has received awards and been exhibited at both Oklahoma City and Tulsa Zoo Photography Competitions. My paintings were shown in the juried exhibition in support of the fund raising event for The Mary Rose, at Oklahoma Christian University. I have enjoyed successful solo exhibitions of both paintings and photography at Norman, Oklahoma's Rock Creek Vineyard’s Midsummer’s Eve, The Art of Yoga Studio & Gallery in the Oklahoma City Paseo Arts District and The Performing Arts Studio & Gallery in Norman, Oklahoma.
