Blair Holt Memorial Foundation - Blair DeLane Holt On May 10, 2007, 16-year-old Chicago honor student at Percy L. Julian high school, Blair Holt, was riding a crowded public bus from school when a teenage gangmember stepped onto the bus with a .40 caliber semiautomatic handgun and fired wildly towards the rear in an attempt to shoot a rival gang-member. When Blair moved to shield a girl from the spray of bullets, he was fatally wounded by a single gunshot to the abdomen. In all, five innocent, unarmed, and defenseless students were seriously injured in that horrific tragedy. Four students survived, and two still have major medical and health risks to this day. This horrific incident is so tragically reminenscent of Virgina Tech, Northern Illinois University and of course, Columbine, where again, youth violence continued to rear its ugly head. While at Christ Advocate Hospital in Oak Lawn, Illinois, it wasn't until 8pm that a surgical nurse informed us that the most vital organ damaged in Blair's body was the aorta, which allows constant blood-flow to the heart. Blair continued to lose blood, but he was fighting to stay alive. Finally, at about 9:10pm the emergency room surgical/trauma doctor came out and asked Annette and me to walk into the other "room" with him. We did, with a number of immediate family and close friends with us. The doctor explained that the gunshot wound severely damaged vital organs and caused a lot of bleeding, that when one damaged organ was found and sutured, another wound would open, causing excessive blood-lose. The doctor said Blair fought back, very hard, as his young heart gave out several times. He was ressucitated each time, but his heart couldn't take the stress of the blood-lose. Before he could finish his sentence, Annette said, "So what you are telling us is our baby didn't make it?!" The doctor said, "Yes, Mrs. Holt, Blair did not make it.. I pronounced his death at approximately 9:03pm. I'm sorry. We did everything we could to save his life." Annette ran out of the "room" screaming in shock, horror and disbelief, as everyone else followed in the same manner.. The doctor and I were the only two left in the "room." I hate the visions of that "room" to this day. I grabbed the doctor's hand, feeling quite numb and traumatized myself, and thanked the doctor for at least trying to save Blair's life. He walked out of the "room." As a father, I never felt so all alone with a sense of abandonment in my entire life. Before I crossed over the threshold of the doorway, I stretched out both my arms until each hand pressed against the door frame and said to myself, "OH GOD GIVE ME STRENGTH." A voice unlike I ever heard said to me, "Ronnie you are not alone. I am with you. You ask for STRENGTH, and it is done. Life as you know it has been changed for the rest of your days. There is much work ahead and much to be done." "GOD BLESS YOUR MINISTRIES." June 1,1990 - May 10,2007
