ศูนย์อาสาสมัคร มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์ ต้องการที่จะสร้างโอกาสให้แก่นักศึกษาในการไปสัมผัสความจริงและการเรียนรู้ทางสังคม รวมทั้งโอกาสของลงมือทำบางสิ่งที่มีประโยชน์แก่สังคมและชุมชน โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งกับชุมชนรอบๆ มหาวิทยาลัยซึ่งอยู่ใกล้ตัว และให้นักศึกษาได้มีการ “ลงมือ” นำเอา “ความรู้” ไปใช้ในการแก้ปัญหาของชุมชนและสังคม เพื่อทำให้เกิดกระบวนการเรียนรู้แบบบริการสังคม (Service Learning) เห็นตนเองเป็นส่วนหนึ่งในการแก้ปัญหา และเกิดการเรียนรู้ที่จะเป็นพลเมือง (Civic Education) ที่ร่วมกันรับผิดชอบสังคม หากทำเช่นนี้ได้ ผู้จบการศึกษาจากมหาวิทยาลัยอันจะเป็นผู้นำของประเทศไทยในอนาคตจะเป็นผู้ ซึ่งมีจิตสำนึกที่รับผิดชอบต่อสังคม และมี “จิตอาสา” ในการร่วมแก้ปัญหาของชุมชนและสังคมอย่างแท้จริง
