Catherine Scala: New Hampshire abstract painter
Catherine Scalas abstract acrylic paintings use the visual vocabulary of geometric form,
painterly brushwork, color and at times, humor, to achieve an expressive tension between paradoxical conditions.
Her charcoal drawings employ a rubbing technique (frottage), juxtapose hard-edged imagery with hand-worked grounds,
and balance the refined versus organic. Both projects reinterpret the modernist logic of figure/ground in a contemporary,
post-postmodern light and as objects, speak to the issues of futility and ethics in our media saturated culture.
