j.wong music
j.wong is a Seattle based singer-songwriter currently playing and touring in support of an EP entitled j.wong and the popular butchers, scheduled for release in the fall of 2009. He was a founding member of the math-rock band Rand-Univac, which also included James Pants and members of Vellela Vellela. His melodic indie-folk is often compared to the music of David Bazan of Pedro the Lion and Sufjan Stevens. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii j.wong and his family moved to a suburb of Seattle while he was still in elementary school. He was then introduced to the diversity and energy of northwest culture. After he pleaded with them for years, his parents finally gave in and bought him a guitar. They expected (as most parents would) that he would tinker with it for a week or two, and that it would eventually find its way into a corner of his bedroom to collect dust. Instead, he loved the instrument and his new-found creative freedom, and has been playing that same guitar (among others) for the past thirteen years. Following the usual stages of musical adolescence, j.wong began to admire songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Johnny Cash, Elliott Smith, and Elvis Costello, as well as bands like Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, Starflyer 59, and Damien Jurado. j.wong tries to push himself as a songwriter, lyricist and musician and continues in the tradition and art of his craft.
