movementofyouth.com MOVEMENT OF YOUTH
Program Overview Movement of Youth is a comprehensive educational and mentoring program built to expand educational opportunities for minority high school students in the Durham Public Schools System. Movement of Youth encourages minority high school students, who have demonstrated academic promise by the end of their freshman years, to pursue higher education. Primarily administered at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the program is designed to enhance academic performance, develop strong interpersonal skills, build leadership skills, and establish a positive support network — all to assist students in their desire for higher education. Services Movement of Youth provides three primary services during the school year: 1:1 Mentoring, Saturday Academy, and Community Outreach. Through this dynamic design, participants receive intellectually challenging programming, positive role models to help set long-term aspirations as well as the mentoring and financial support required to nurture and fulfill those aspirations. Students selected for the program also have the added bonus of access to internships and summer programs at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University, and Duke University. Our team works diligently to empower our minority youth and assist them in their journey to pursue higher education. Selection Process Rising high school sophomores in the Durham Public Schools System are nominated by their teachers during the spring of their freshman year for participation in the program. In order to be eligible for nomination, students must be a member of a traditionally underrepresented population and possess a GPA of 2.5 or above. Upon successful completion of an application process, students gain admission to the program. Our program is highly selective; In view of this fact, our participants represent some of the best and brightest students that Durham Public Schools has to offer. Conclusion Overtime, Movement of Youth will create a learning environment that will be an invaluable resource to young people, aspiring mentors and the community at large. 1:1 Mentoring 1:1 Mentoring is the cornerstone of Movement of Youth. Rising college sophomores apply annually to become mentors. Upon completion of a rigorous application and interview process, successful candidates are then paired with a student to begin a three-year mentoring relationship. Mentors receive continuous training throughout the duration of the program and participate in monthly chat sessions to report their student’s progress. 1:1 Mentoring relationships establish a sense of personal responsibility that gives our youth the commitment to follow through on the path to higher education with a sense of pride and accomplishment. We rely on the commitment of our mentors to make a dramatic difference in the lives of their individual students. Saturday Academy Saturday Academy is held twice a month and features a variety of sessions built to challenge participants in different ways intellectually, physically, and socially. Sessions are tailored to address the complex and unique issues that minority youth face daily while also exposing students to activities they may not normally have access to. Past sessions include: Golf Clinic featuring PGA Tour golfer Carl Kimball Hip-Hop Symposium featuring Christopher “Play” Martin from the House Party movie series TRIAD Health Conference sponsored by the UNC School of Public Health Business Professionalism Workshop sponsored by Barry’s Menswear and the UNC Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs Mock Debate sponsored by the UNC Black Law Students Association By attending these sessions, students will gain the tools necessary to excel in a variety of different situations. Community Outreach Community Outreach allows students to have a positive impact in the community by requiring students to complete two planned community outreach events per year. Activities include: UNC Dance Marathon – Students participate in an all-night dance to raise money for children at the UNC Children’s Hospital Steps for Health: A Walk for Breast Cancer – Students participate in a 3.1 mile walk to raise money for Breast Cancer research (students will plan and implement) Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service – Students participate in MLK Day of Service activities on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Service Project Development – Students develop and execute a community outreach initiative The success cycle cannot stop at the mentee level. Mentees must personally reach out and use their success to become instruments of change in society.
