Shuso Hossen
The Santa Monica Zen Center is an urban, non-residential Zen training and development center. SMZC was founded in 1994 under the auspices of Taizan Maezumi Roshi, Abbot and Head of the Three Treasures lineage of Zen Buddhism, and William Yoshin Jordan Sensei, with the commitment and support of the founding Sangha members. The Centerâs teachings and practices mirror the richness of the Three Treasures lineage in providing training in both the Rinzai and Soto Zen styles of zazen and koan study, which matures oneâs insight and practice through commitment to the student/teacher Zen training relationship. This supports the Centerâs objective of developing enlightened Buddhist coaches and activists whose lives witness the wisdom and harmony of the Buddhaâs teaching of the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path and transform the greater society with the clear seeing and kind relatedness of the Buddhaâs teachings.

Prof. Masunaga Reiho was a Zen teacher in a direct lineage of Dogen, and a Judo gentleman. The site is based mainly on his translations of Shobogenzo (Meaning the eye and the treasury of the true law) and other Zen works, from Japanese to English.
