Immigration to New Zealand
Immigration to New Zealand began with Polynesian settlement in New Zealand, then uninhabited, in the thirteenth century (approximately). European colonisation provided a major influx following the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. Subsequently waves of immigration have occurred: chiefly from the British Isles, but also from continental Europe, East Asia and the Pacific. Regulations provide that immigrants must be of good character. E.g., someone will be excluded if in the past 10 years he was convicted and sentenced to imprisonment for 12 months or more.
