Apdmonline.com: Association of Marthoma Physicians and Dentists - History and Mission of A.P.D.M. -by Dr. Leena MathewsThe Association of Physicians & Dentists of Mar Thoma Church was inaugurated in the presence and with the blessings of Most Rev. Dr. Alexander Mar Thoma Metropolitan and the Most Rev. Philipose Mar Chrysostom Mar Thoma Metropolitan at a public gathering of physicians, dentists, medical students, interns, residents and their families in August,1991. Dr. Thomas Abraham was the founding president of APDM. The APDM was founded to foster Christian fellowship and to promote international medical and dental missionary work with the major focus on the special needs in India. Our goal is to bring dedicated physicians, dentists, residents, interns, fellows, medical and dental students under one umbrella to further our global mission of Christian healing ministry. This association has grown into and active and spiritually committed group of dedicated members . By God’s grace the members have been able to initiate and financially support many medical mission projects, mostly in India and offer monetary contributions for numerous worthy causes over the years. By meeting on a regular basis for fellowship, the members and families have established long lasting friendships. REGULAR EVENTS The APDM conducts regular monthly prayer meetings at the residences of the members with an emphasis on serious Bible study and musical praise and worship. To date, the studies of the Gospel of John, Romans, Revelation, Daniel and Hebrews have been completed under the excellent leadership of Dr. John Abraham and Dr. Alex Thomas. The music led by Dr. John Abraham with musical accompaniments , has provided each event with an uplifting and enthusiastic environment for praise and worship. Each year on Good Friday evening, a special fasting prayer meeting is held in Dr. Alex Thomas’s home. This has been a time of rededication and Christian sharing. The APDM conducts annual retreats since 1991. The 3-day retreats over the summer have been held in several locations including the scenic Warwick Center, and other retreat centers in Rhode Island, Staten Island, and Allentown and Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The 2007 and 2008 retreats were held in the Doubletree Resort and Executive Meeting Center in Somerset, New Jersey.The conferences have been attended by most of our Thirumenis and many Achens and distinguished speakers. The programs at the retreat include messages, discussions, praise and worship, with emphasis on spiritual fellowship, rejuvenation, and recommitment in Christian life with an a special relevance to medical missionary work . Able leadership and very active participation of all the attendees provides a stimulating and challenging environment for spiritual growth and also a time of rest and socialization with our peers, friends and families. The retreat concludes with Holy Communion service held at that location. The Sunday offertory is given to a special cause at the conclusion of the retreat. An added popular program over the last two retreats been medical talks by extremely renowned speakers, some of whom are active APDM members . APDM conducts annual Christmas program hosted by members in a Mar Thoma church. The program includes carol singing ,Christmas messages and dinner.
