My first camera was a little Kodak instamatic with the disposable flashbulbs. I spent a year’s worth of allowance on film on our first trip to the San Diego Wild Animal Park. I’ve since dabbled with photography for the past 30 years. My wife, Gina, and I travel whenever we can, focusing on the American West. There are many other beautiful places and we hope to see them all, but this is home. Thank you for looking. Enjoy the show.

Robert & Virginia Small
Our images have appeared in various publications including BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year, National Wildlife, Birderwatcher's Digest, National Geographic Magazine (USA), and as covers on National Geographic Magazine (Europe, Scandinavia and South America and the inaugural issue in Russia). They have been on exhibit in the Natural History Museum (London), the Prairie Textures Exhibit in Sascatchewan and are on permanent exhibit in numerous National Wildlife Refuges in the US and the Fish Creek Bear Viewing Site in Alaska . Book credits include Light on the Earth, National Geographic 100 Best Covers (South America) and The Backyard Birdwatcher's Bible.
We spent over 15 years wandering the byways of North America and Europe and finally settled down in Blaine WA. We now spend half the year traveling in our motor coach and the other half in our home and garden, which has been certified as a Backyard Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation.
Robert's wood sculptures have appeared in the All California Art 56th and 58th National Orange Shows, in the Venice Canal Festival and are in private collections.

Email me
Photography allows me to capture and sometimes share an emotion, a gesture, a mood or a moment that compels me. I try to record the ephemeral, something that is there and gone, never to be replicated. A fleeting moment captured and shared with the viewer.
