Artist Statement/Katharine Boyd
My artistic process involves combining drawings from direct observation with lingering images left behind by my dreams. The turbulent and uncontrollable aspects of nature and humankind’s attempts to control it are what fascinates and compels me. I seek to understand my personal relationship with nature in hopes of transforming my curiosity into one of inner connectedness with it.
Simultaneously, I am faced with seeing the infinite and awe-inspiring aspects of nature as it surrounds me, but at the same time seems to be disappearing from me. Thus, I am left with questions such as; can I control what is disappearing from me? Can I express in paint the fragility of the natural world that surrounds me?
I recombine drawings and distill the concepts further into a variety of media. For the past twenty years, these concerns have been expressed in mixed media paintings and monotypes, drawings and/or performance installations. The work has evolved from public performance to the private and reflective world of painting and drawing.

I have spent my life in New Mexico, where I have ridden horses on ditch banks and in the mountains; raced sailboats; raised children, dogs and vegetables; studied photography and painting at University of New Mexico and other venues; documented numerous weddings and other celebrations; traveled the world with great joy, but so far, I have always returned happily to the state that I love. I have been a photographer for thirty years, primarily specializing in B&W portraiture and event photography, but recently I have begun exploring some of the artistic possibilities within digital photography.
While I see photography as a never-ending quest of creating an image that accurately captures the beauty of what I see and how I see it, the best part comes the ink hits the paper and the unexpected happens. It is that bit of painterly serendipity, which occurs from time to time, that intrigues me the most and keeps me searching.

Though not my profession, photography is a great passion of mine .Sometimes I see the extraordinary, I just wish others could see what I see. I love to find beauty in everything around us. I view the world as a great big canvas that lets me be creative.
It takes a lot of imagination to be a good photographer. You need less imagination to be a painter because you can invent things. But in photography everything is so ordinary; it takes a lot of looking before you learn to see the extraordinary.
